LMS Design for Adult and Continuing Education
Design an LMS for adult and continuing education with a checklist for experience, relevance, autonomy, constraints and recognition of prior learning.
By DoviLearn® Insights Team

Most learning management systems were designed with full-time students in mind. Adult and continuing education bends those assumptions: learners log in late at night, return after long gaps, and judge every extra click against a busy life. Designing an LMS for them is less about features and more about removing friction.
Interoperability before features
Adult provision often spans several tools, from a core LMS to assessment and credentialing services. LTI is a 1EdTech interoperability standard that lets learning platforms connect securely to external tools and content. [c-1edtech] Relying on open interoperability standards keeps the system flexible and avoids locking continuing-education programmes into one vendor.
Accessibility is a baseline, not an upgrade. WCAG 2.2 is a W3C Recommendation organising accessibility requirements under the perceivable, operable, understandable and robust principles. [c-wcag] Meeting it keeps the platform usable for the wide range of adults in continuing education.

A design checklist for adult LMS use
• Prior experience: let learners carry forward completed units and credits rather than restarting.
• Relevance: surface the next useful action, not a wall of modules.
• Autonomy: make self-enrolment, pacing and re-entry after a break straightforward.
• Constraints: optimise for mobile, low bandwidth and short sessions.
• Recognition of prior learning: support evidence upload and assessment that credits existing competence.
Support is part of the design
Adults returning to study often need a human to unstick an enrolment or a lost password before they will persist. A support model with clear routes and quick responses does as much for completion as any platform feature.
Where DoviLearn® fits
A DoviLearn® platform and delivery model for organisations can be evaluated against this checklist, with the wider learning technology context showing how the system fits together. Procurement, information governance and assessment choices stay with the organisation, and the example demonstrates a process rather than guaranteed learning, employment or business outcomes.
