Learning analytics can sharpen teaching or quietly distort it. This guide walks through a responsible workflow: what to collect, how to read it, when to act, and how to protect the learners behind the numbers.

Treat analytics as learner data

Analytics is learner data, and that brings duties. UNESCO's guidance warns that data about learners carries privacy duties, and calls for protections to be built in rather than added later. [c-unesco] Responsible use starts by collecting only what a teaching decision needs.

A responsible workflow

• Collect with purpose: gather the few signals a teaching decision needs, not everything a system can log.

• Read in context: pair a metric with what you know about the learner before drawing a conclusion.

• Act proportionately: use analytics to prompt a conversation or a check, not to label a learner.

• Review and delete: keep data only as long as it serves the learner.

Do not mistake a pattern for a cause

A dashboard can mislead as easily as it informs. The What Works Clearinghouse reminds practitioners that a correlation in a dashboard is not evidence that an intervention caused a change. [c-wwc] Treat a metric as a prompt to look closer, not as a verdict on a learner.

Keep the learner in view

• Be transparent with learners about what is tracked and why.

• Watch for bias: a metric that flags one group more than others needs scrutiny, not action.

• Let the teacher's judgement, not the dashboard, make the final call.

Where DoviLearn® fits

Research-led adaptive design, described under DoviLearn® research , can be evaluated with this workflow: what is collected, how it is read, and who decides when to act. The learning technology context sits alongside it. Teachers keep the judgement, and the example shows a process rather than guaranteed learning, employment or business outcomes.
